DMSA kidney scan factsheet
Introduction
A DMSA scan is used to check the kidneys, including:
- where they are sitting
- size
- shape
- how well they are working.
The DMSA scan uses:
- Dimercapto succinic acid (DMSA) - an injection of radioactive fluid that moves through the body
- a gamma camera - a large camera that measures radiation.
The gamma camera shows the DMSA moving through the kidneys.
A DMSA scan is used to check kidney conditions like:
- scarring from infections
- urinary reflux 鈥 when urine flows from the bladder back into the kidneys
- pyelonephritis 鈥 bacterial infection
- ectopic renal tissue 鈥 when the kidneys are found in a different position to where they should be
- infarction 鈥 when blood supply is blocked
- horseshoe kidney 鈥 when the kidneys are fused together
- renal failure 鈥 when the kidneys no longer work properly
- multi-cystic dysplastic kidneys 鈥 where tiny sacs of fluid called cysts take over the kidneys
- renal trauma 鈥 damage to the kidneys from a hit or fall.
聽Before the scan
Your child can eat and drink normally before the scan.
The risks of radiation and allergic reactions are very low. Let your child鈥檚 treatment team know if they have any allergies.
Talk to your child's doctor or treatment team if you have any concerns or questions.
Numbing cream
Needles can be uncomfortable for children. Numbing cream can be used on children over two years old.
If your child needs numbing cream, you will need to:
- ask for it before the day of the scan
- arrive 30 minutes early to the appointment so it has time to work.
聽During the scan
Your child will not feel anything during the scan, and the camera will not touch them.
The DMSA scan happens in two parts. You can stay with your child.
Part 1:
- the DMSA medication is injected using a small needle
- the medication will take around three hours to move through the kidneys
- during this time, your child can eat, drink and play as normal
- the nuclear medicine scientist will let you know when your child needs to return.
Part 2:
Your child will be asked to do a wee and empty their bladder. If your child wears a nappy, you will be asked to change them into a clean nappy before the scan starts.
- your child lies on the scanning bed
- velcro straps may be used to gently help your child stay still
- the camera will come close to your child鈥檚 body and take pictures from different angles
- this will take between 30 minutes and one hour.
聽After the scan
You can leave once the images have been taken. The results may take some time to come back, and your child's doctor will contact you when they are ready.

Radiation
Your child will be exposed to a small amount of radiation during the scan. The benefits of finding and treating kidney problems are greater than the small risk of this low dose.
Allergic reactions
Allergic reactions to radiotracer are very rare and usually mild. Your child鈥檚 doctor will talk to you about any potential risks before the scan. Let your child鈥檚 treatment team know if they have any allergies.
Supporting your child during the scan
Scans can be uncomfortable for children. You can prepare your child by:
- explain to them why the test is needed in simple words
- bring along their favourite comfort objects, like a blanket, toy, or dummy
- arriving 30 minutes before the appointment if your child needs numbing cream.
