Gastroenteritis

Gastroenteritis or gastro, is a common childhood illness.  A more severe type of gastro is rotavirus.

In Australia, the rate of gastro is highest in children under 5 years of age 鈥 almost 2 episodes per child, per year and most children generally get rotavirus at least once by age 3.

Gastro and rotavirus can spread quickly and are more common in winter.  Symptoms can be mild and treated at home but can become more severe.  Make sure babies and children stay hydrated so they don't become dehydrated.

Babies under six months old who have symptoms of gastroenteritis should be seen by a doctor as soon as possible.

If your child's vomit is green, call Triple Zero (000) for an ambulance or go to your nearest emergency department. Green vomit could be a sign of bilious vomiting, which can be life-threatening.
