About our service
The Haematology department provides a clinical, consultative and diagnostic service for children with non-malignant haematological conditions.
We treat conditions including but not limited to:
- Haemophilia and other bleeding disorders
- Thromboses and anticoagulation
- Haemoglobinopathies such as thalassaemia and sickle cell disease
- Haemolytic anaemia
- Immune thrombocytopenia
- Neutropenia
- Bone marrow failure
- Vascular malformations cared for in conjunction with paediatric, dermatology and surgical teams.
The Haematology Department is part of the Kids Cancer Centre (KCC).
Our service is comprised of a team of medical, nursing, allied health and psychological staff.
Weekly meetings between paediatric oncologists, haematologist, radiation oncologists, paediatric surgeons, radiologists, nuclear medicine physicians and pathologists ensures optimal care.

Referral and appointment process for parents and carers
Request a refferal
To make an appointment at our clinic, you will need a referral from your clinician.
They will assess your child, discuss your concerns, and make a referral to the appropriate service.
Referrals should include:
- Referral on letterhead
- Address to haematologist by name
- Detailed assessment and all relevant test results
- Patient name, date of birth, gender, address
- Preferred contact person and number, language spoken at home and need for an interpreter
- Medicare card details
- Signature and contact details of referring doctor
- Provider number of consultant requesting referral
Track your referral
Our department uses Consultmed to manage referrals. Your referring clinician sends the e-referral to us using the secure Consultmed platform.鈥�
If your clinician has questions about Consultmed or require technical support, they can contact [email protected].
New referrals are triaged according to clinical priority and patients will be advised of their appointment through an email or phone call.

Clinic hours:
- Monday: 2pm - 5pm (Dr Susan Russell, Dr Meredith Wiggins)
- Wednesday: 9:30am - 12:30pm, 2pm - 5pm (Dr Susan Russell)
- Thursday: 2pm - 5pm (Dr Meredith Wiggins)
