Influenza

Every year in Australia, hundreds of children get serious influenza symptoms and need to be treated in hospital.

Influenza can be serious for otherwise healthy babies and children.  It is also serious for children with chronic health conditions.

Influenza strains can change each year.  Yearly influenza vaccines are important for young babies and children to stay protected.  Optimal protection lasts for 3 to 4 months after the vaccine is given. It is best to get the influenza vaccine in April or May as it can take a few weeks to get maximum protection.

Yearly influenza vaccines are free for children aged between 6-months and 5-years of age.  Some providers may charge an administration or consultation fee.  Check with your provider if this applies to your child.
