New design drawings unveiled for Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick
New design drawings unveiled for the Sydney Children's Hospital Stage 1 and Minderoo Children's Comprehensive Cancer Centre (SCH1/MCCCC) highlight private family spaces, diverse play and recreation areas, and an emphasis on natural light and nature within the building.
Her three-month-old daughter Eleanor spent two months at Sydney Children鈥檚 Hospital, Randwick after being diagnosed with epilepsy and infantile spasms. The family lives in Dee Why in Sydney鈥檚 northern beaches, with the distance an added challenge to the family鈥檚 hospital stay.
"Private bedrooms would probably help many parents, myself included. I am currently sleeping on a fold-out lounge," said Rebekah.
A proper bed and a nice, private room would be great for parents. They would be able to feel more relaxed and have more privacy for themselves," said Eleanor's mum Rebekah.
Builder has commenced major construction work on the SCH1/MCCCC, marking a significant milestone for the $658 million redevelopment project.
The new hospital will offer new and expanded paediatric services, including a greatly expanded emergency department, a new medical short-stay unit, and a neurosciences centre.
The Minderoo Children's Comprehensive Cancer Centre will be the first facility of its type in the country - revolutionising childhood cancer research and treatment in Australia.
Family-centred treatment and support are at the centre of the hospital's design, with additional private spaces, recreation and food preparation areas included, and the introduction of single patient bedrooms across the service.
Project architects oversee the new hospital's interior design elements, developed with the input of around 2,000 patient families, staff and community members, and inspired by the local coastline and native fauna.
When completed, the building will include:
- A new and enhanced children鈥檚 intensive care unit, including a new close observation unit
- A new and larger children's Emergency Department
- A new medical short stay unit
- A new neurosciences centre
- A new virtual care centre and hospital command centre
- Inpatient units for medical, surgical and sleep studies
- The Minderoo Children's Comprehensive Cancer Centre, incorporating a day oncology centre and inpatient units, as well as a dedicated new bone marrow transplant unit
- Co-located laboratories to support cancer research, education and training
- A new general pharmacy with advanced therapeutics and a sterile suite
- Improved parent amenities, including new overnight beds for parents and bereavement rooms
- Education and training spaces.
The project is expected to be completed in late 2025 and is being delivered by Health Infrastructure in partnership with the Sydney Children's Hospitals 星空体育, Children's Cancer Institute and UNSW.
