Superheroes help install second crane on SCH1/MCCCC site
A group of patients and their siblings were among the children who took part in a superhero-themed event to celebrate the installation of the second tower crane on the Sydney Children's Hospital Stage 1 and Minderoo Children's Comprehensive Cancer Centre site in May.
One of those young people was 13-year-old Senri, who travelled from Solomon Islands for specialised treatment after an accident in 2021 left him with severely burnt hands.
"Doing activities with the other kids helps them all, particularly the children who have been at the hospital for a long time," said Senri's guardian Ros.
"It's a distraction and a highlight for them, but they seem to pick up on the fact people are caring. It was enlightening for him that there are people out there that really do care."
Builder hosted the event as part of a commitment to involve patients and their families in each stage of the hospital redevelopment. Superhero characters, face painting and balloon art stalls entertained the children in attendance.
"Events like these are a fantastic way to entertain and educate patients and their siblings, some of whom may have spent extended periods at our hospital," said SCH1/MCCCC project director Cathy Lovell.
"We want to take our young people on the entire journey of the hospital redevelopment, so they feel connected and comforted by the space we are providing."
The second tower crane, which will reach a final height of 85 metres, accompanies the first crane, which was installed in April. The towering machines will enable materials to be efficiently and safely lifted within the construction site and will be a feature on the Randwick skyline until early 2024.
The redevelopment team is running a 'Name the Cranes' competition, open to patients, siblings and children of staff. Entrants are in the running to win great prizes included iPads and Lego Kits.
