Setting up the electric breast pump in hospital information sheet
Introduction
A guide for new parents to learn about setting up the Medela Symphony Electric Breast Pump in hospital.

Instructions
Step 1
Make sure pump and surrounds are clean by wiping down with disinfectant wipes. Plug machine into wall.
Step 2
Wash hands.
Step 3
Assemble parts as per image below, and place in machine.

Step 4
The cap is inserted into the top of the machine with a 鈥渃lick鈥�.

Step 5
Make sure the breast shield is the right size. Centre your nipple in the middle of breast shield and make sure nipple isn鈥檛 touching sides of breast shield when on.

Different sized breast shields are available. Please return these to nursing staff before transfer to ward/discharge, they are reusable*. These can also be purchased from a pharmacy or online.
*In between uses wash as per expressing set, and do not throw away.

Step 6
Press on/off button to turn machine on.

Step 7
Adjust the suction strength with the large middle knob. To find the right amount of suction for you, adjust the knob clockwise until slightly uncomfortable, then twist back until comfortable again.
Drop symbols indicate the strength of the suction.
Step 8
The machine will start quickly, imitating a baby's initial fast sucks at the breast. After around 2 minutes, the speed of suction changes and becomes slower, longer and stronger. Lower the suction again if needed.
The cycle finishes automatically after 15 minutes.
Expressing should not hurt
