About our service
Speech pathologists provide assessment and therapy for infants and children who have feeding, swallowing and communication difficulties as inpatients and outpatients.
This includes infants and children who:
- have difficulty using and/or understanding words and sentences, correctly producing speech sounds or using fluent speech
- need help with their communication, following neurological events such as stroke or head injury.
- have difficulty with swallowing and feeding due to prematurity and/or other medical conditions, including cleft lip and palate, neurological disorders, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease including Videofluoroscopic Swallow Study (VFSS) investigations.
Assessment and therapy is also offered to inpatients who require an augmented communication system, or who are at risk of future speech or language problems (e.g. tracheostomy, seizures, brain tumour).
The department:
- provides education and advice to clients, carers, and other professionals
- offers state-wide professional development opportunities and tertiary consultative services.

Speech pathologists attend a number of clinics in the outpatient or speech pathology departments at Sydney Children鈥檚 Hospital, Randwick.
- The Cleft Palate Clinic and Craniofacial Clinic (including Videofluoroscopic palatal studies)
- Brain Injury Clinic and Intensive Rehabilitation Day Stay Program
- Cerebral Palsy Clinic

Outpatient community services
The department offers outpatient community services to infants and children living within the northern sector of South Eastern Sydney Local Health District.
Referrals can be made at any time by parents, teachers, doctors and other health professionals by contacting Allied Health reception on (02) 9382 1021 (Monday - Friday).
The waiting list and service eligibility will be discussed at the time of intake by a speech pathologist.
Services are offered at two locations at Sydney Children鈥檚 Hospital, Randwick:
- main hospital building in the Allied Health North department
- Sydney Children鈥檚 Hospital Community Health Centre on the corner of Avoca and Barker Streets.
Aboriginal services
The service provides an Aboriginal focused speech pathology service to the local community.
This includes outreach at the La Perouse Aboriginal Community Health Centre providing:
- assessment by the developmental assessment team
- the provision of therapy and ongoing management as required.
