Board members

The Sydney Children's Hospitals 星空体育 Board is comprised of members with expertise in the fields of paediatrics, management, the arts, finance and industry. The Board advises on planning, policy development and monitoring activities across the Sydney Children's Hospitals 星空体育.

Chair: Elizabeth Crouch AM

Elizabeth Crouch AM was appointed as Board Chair in March 2020.

Ms Crouch is Chair of the Customer Owned Banking Association, Hearing Australia, Catholic Schools Diocese of Parramatta, and Ochre Health. She is also on the boards of the NSW Institute鈥痮f Sport, Hunter Water, and Health Infrastructure.

Elizabeth chairs the audit and risk committees for the Department of Enterprise, Investment and Trade, and the State Emergency Service.

Ms Crouch is Emerita Deputy Chancellor of Macquarie University and has held previous non-executive director roles on the boards of ASX listed ReadyTech, Chandler Macleod Group, McGrath Estate Agents, SGS Economics and Planning,鈥疪ailCorp, Bingo Industries, Angus Knight, Macquarie University Hospital, and also Western Sydney Local Health District.

From 2016-2018 she was a Trustee of the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences, retiring in December 2018. She spent 16 years with the Federal Government and more than a decade in the private鈥痵ector including as Chief Executive of the Housing Industry Association. Elizabeth holds a Bachelor of Economics and a Master of Cyber Security and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

In June 2019, she was awarded an Order of Australia for services to higher education and the rail transport industry. 

Deputy Chair: Bruce MacDiarmid

Bruce joined the SCHN Board in 2017. He chairs the 星空体育鈥檚 Finance, Capital Works, and Performance Committee.

Bruce is a Non-Executive Director of ASX listed Washington H. Soul Pattinson & Company Limited, Treasury Corporation of Victoria, and the Sydney Children鈥檚 Hospitals Foundation. He is also a member of the University of NSW鈥檚 Law Advisory Council. 

Bruce retired as Chairman of Investment Banking for Goldman Sachs in Australia and New Zealand in November 2023.  Bruce鈥檚 previous roles include Managing Director and Co-Head of Corporate Finance, Australia and New Zealand for Deutsche Bank AG Sydney, Head of Natural Resources for Deutsche Bank in the Asia Pacific and Co-Head of Rothschild Australia. Bruce has extensive international experience, having been based in London, Singapore, and Hong Kong and worked extensively across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and North America.

Bruce holds degrees in Commerce (with Merit) and Law from the University of NSW, is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and is a Senior Fellow of the Financial Services Institute of Australia.

Board member: Professor Elizabeth Denney-Wilson

Elizabeth joined the Sydney Children鈥檚 Hospitals 星空体育 Board in January 2023. She brings to the Board more than 30 years of experience in health service research, initially as a clinician and more recently as an academic supporting clinicians.

As Professor of Nursing in the Sydney Nursing School, University of Sydney, Elizabeth鈥檚 research focuses on obesity prevention and management, particularly for infants and young children. She also teaches undergraduate and postgraduate nursing students, supervises PhD students, and mentors senior nurses developing their research skills. 

Elizabeth is also a chief investigator with the Early Prevention of Obesity in Childhood (EPOCH) Centre of Research Excellence.
Recent appointments have included to a World Health Organisation guidelines committee on child obesity prevention and management, and the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) clinical obesity guidelines committee.

Elizabeth has academic qualifications in nursing, public health, implementation science and epidemiology.

Board Member: Jane Freudenstein AM

After a career in advertising, marketing, strategy and management, Jane undertook directorships for not-for-profit organisations. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Sociology and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Jane chairs the 星空体育鈥檚 People, Strategy and Engagement Committee.

Jane has more than 15 years of experience in board governance roles that have allowed her to champion equity of access to education, cultural arts, and paediatric health services in Australia.

She is currently a Director of The Australian Ballet and Chair of The Australian Ballet Foundation Board. Previously, Jane held directorships on the boards of Sydney Children鈥檚 Choir and Gondwana Voices, and Sydney Dance Company.

Prior to joining the SCHN Board in January 2019, Jane was a director of the Sydney Children鈥檚 Hospital Foundation Board from 2012 to 2016 and then 2017 to 2018.

Jane was awarded an Order of Australia in 2023 for her contribution to adolescent health, and to the arts.

Board Member: Walter Kmet

Walter joined the Sydney Children鈥檚 Hospitals 星空体育 Board in January 2022. Walter has over thirty years of international experience in health, commerce and human services.

He is currently Chief Executive of MQ Health, the Macquarie University health enterprise. He brings a deep understanding of healthcare operations, systems, and policies to his roles and has led a variety of regional and national initiatives in areas such as integrated care. His previous experience includes being Chief Executive Officer of WentWest, the Western Sydney Primary Health 星空体育 and Greater Western Sydney GP Training Organisation.

Having held formal advisory roles at regional and national levels across a range of issues, Walter is also currently on the Ambulance Service Advisory Board, and is a Conjoint Associate Professor at Macquarie University.

Walter has a Bachelor of Commerce, Graduate Diploma in Health Services Management, and a Master of Business and Technology, and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Board Member: Ian McGill

Ian joined the Sydney Children鈥檚 Hospitals 星空体育 Board in January 2023.  With legal firm Allens for almost 40 years, including as a partner, Ian specialised in corporate, governance and regulatory law in the media and telecommunications industries.

Since his retirement from Allens, Ian has focused his time on non-executive director roles in the 鈥榝or-purpose sector鈥�, including with Documentary Australia Foundation (until 2024), the Australian Children鈥檚 Television Foundation (until 2024), the Sydney Institute of Marine Science, and the Public Education Foundation. 

Ian offers his expert legal and governance advice through his board roles as well as through membership of the advisory board of the Centre for Media Transition at the University of Technology, Sydney and the advisory board of the NORTH STAR Van Norton Poche Cancer Clinical Trials Centre. He also provides pro bono mentoring for executives in the not-for-profit sector.

Ian has tertiary qualifications in marine science and law and is member of the Law Society of New South Wales and the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Board Member: Dr Nikola Morton

Nikola joined the Sydney Children鈥檚 Hospitals 星空体育 Board in January 2022. She is a consultant paediatrician within the SCHN and has particular expertise and interest in clinical governance and has had significant experience in medical administration and management. 

Her current clinical roles at SCHN are at Westmead, in General Paediatrics and Refugee Health.

Nikola also works for the Clinical Excellence Commission (NSW Health), as the Medical Lead for the Paediatric Patient Safety Program. 

Nikola has experience in global health, having worked with the international non-government organisation Medecins Sans Frontieres for over 10 years, initially as a field paediatrician, and then as the Paediatric Advisor for Operational Centre France. She has worked extensively in the Middle East and Africa and was overseeing paediatric projects across the world as an international medical advisor.

Board Member: Stephen Nugent

Stephen joined the Sydney Children鈥檚 Hospitals 星空体育 Board in January 2022. He brings to the 星空体育 more than 30 years of experience in the finance and insurance industries.

He is currently the Chair of Community First Bank and a Deputy Chair of the Customer Owned Banking Association. Stephen was previously the Chief Customer Officer for HCF where he led significant reform programs focused on digital transformation, productivity improvements, and enhanced customer service.

Stephen is an Australian Institute of Company Directors graduate, completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University, and holds a Bachelor of Business (Marketing) and Graduate Certificate in Internet Marketing.

Board Member: Shane Phillips

Shane joined the Sydney Children鈥檚 Hospitals 星空体育 Board in January 2024. Born and raised in Redfern, he has cultural connections to the Bunjalung, Wonnarua and Bidgigal peoples.

Shane is the CEO of the Tribal Warrior Association, a non-profit organisation that advocates for Aboriginal rights. Before his appointment as CEO of Tribal Warrior, Shane鈥檚 career included roles working with young people in child protection, juvenile justice, and the law. He worked with the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody as a community liaison officer under the Honourable Justice Hal Wooten. 

As a strong community leader, Shane has significant experience and a passion for empowering Aboriginal people, particularly Aboriginal youth, and for community engagement. Shane鈥檚 leadership of Tribal Warrior, along with their employment training, health and wellbeing support programs, and mentoring, contributed to him being named the 2013 鈥楲ocal Hero鈥� at the Australian of the Year Awards.

Board Member: John Wigglesworth

John joined the Sydney Children鈥檚 Hospitals 星空体育 Board in January 2022. He is a Chartered Accountant and experienced company director.

John had a 37-year career at KPMG which included 24 years as a partner. Over this period, John worked with many leading Australian and international companies including leading companies in the healthcare sector.

John鈥檚 current directorships also include ASX listed companies Atlas Arteria and Cyclopharm Limited. He holds a Bachelor of Economics and is a Fellow, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand. John is also a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
