About Community Child Health (CCH)
The Department of Community Child Health (CCH) is a specialist team working to improve the health, wellbeing and development of children in our community.
Our focus is on Priority Populations which includes Aboriginal and refugee children and adolescents, those in Out of Home Care and those using a Healthcare card.
We deliver high-quality innovative health services, and undertake research, education and advocacy in partnership with local communities.
Our work addresses equity in child health focused around 3 key themes:
- Early child development, which includes developmental concerns, disability and developmental-behavioural disorders
- Optimising the life chances for children from Priority Populations to improve health outcomes
- Transforming health systems (including enhancing integrated care, using Arts in Health, and developing equity focused care pathways)
We work together with the at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) to conduct translational health services and health systems research. Our aim is to optimise child health outcomes and address inequities.
Our services
Our services provide integrated outpatient health, developmental and behavioural assessment and management services for children in Northern . We offer clinics at Sydney Children鈥檚 Hospital (Bright Alliance building, Outpatients Department and Sydney Children鈥檚 Community Health Centre), as well as outreach clinics.
We see children from Priority Populations throughout their life span from birth to 16 years. Many of our clinics involve collaboration with other agencies and services.
Hours: our services operate 8.30am 鈥� 5.00pm, Monday to Friday

Refugee clinic
Community Child Health runs a multidisciplinary health and wellbeing assessment for asylum seeking and refugee children.
We provide:
- a comprehensive health assessment on arrival, including with a Social Worker if required
- assessment of nutritional and infectious disease status
- assessment of development and other identified problems
- reviews of children's pathology results
- coordinated ongoing health care to refugee children and their families.
The team assists GPs in case management in the community.

Priority Populations ADHD clinic
The Priority Populations ADHD clinic is for school aged children with difficulties with learning, inattention & impulsivity who come from Priority Populations (as defined below).
Acceptance of a patient requires an intake discussion and should meet the following criteria:
- reside in the local geographical catchment area (Northern SESLHD)
- aged 5-16 yrs and attending school
- belongs to a priority population i.e.
- Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
- Refugee or Asylum seeker
- In out of home care (OOHC) or case managed by the Department of Communities and Justice
- Are known to obtain family support from agencies such as Centrelink; NGOs (e.g. Barnardos, Benevolent Society, Anglicare); Disability support services (NDIS)
- Parent or child requires an interpreter.
We provide an assessment, diagnosis and medical management of children with ADHD symptoms that impact on the child鈥檚 learning, behaviour and general wellbeing. We assess and support other comorbidities that might overlap with the symptoms of ADHD.
Psychological, behavioural support and IQ assessment cannot be provided by this clinic currently; external services are required to provide these. We work alongside behavioural interventional services such as the Child and Family East Service (CAF脡) and provide support for multiagency (including school) case conferences.

Developmental services
Our developmental services are delivered in collaboration with Tumbatin Developmental clinic. Together we provide the full range of integrated outpatient developmental services.
All developmental referrals should be made directly to Tumbatin, and the appropriate developmental clinic will be allocated. All referrals go through an intake process prior to being accepted.

Children under 5 years of age with suspected delays or disorders in development may be allocated to the Developmental Screening clinic or the Priority Population Developmental Assessment clinic, which provide a developmental diagnosis and assessment. Although these clinics are open to referrals from GPs, childcare, early childhood nurses, allied health therapists and parents, all referrals go through the Tumbatin intake process via the .

La Perouse paediatric clinic
The La Perouse paediatric clinic provides comprehensive medical assessment and follow-up care for Aboriginal Children and Young People in South Eastern Sydney. The clinic manages chronic and complex medical conditions, behaviour and learning difficulties, and adolescent health issues. We also review children in Out of Home Care, including for comprehensive 2B assessments.

Referral and appointment process for parents and carers
Request a referral
To make an appointment at one of our clinics you will need a referral from your GP, paediatrician or specialist.
They will assess your child, discuss your concerns, and make a referral to the appropriate service.鈥� They will use Consultmed to submit the referral.

Track your referral
Our department uses Consultmed to manage referrals. You or your referring clinician sends the e-referral to us using the secure Consultmed platform.
As our clinics offer comprehensive assessment services, the referrer and/or child's carer may be contacted and asked to provide further information. This is in order to help us understand the child and their health, developmental and behavioural needs. It is important that this is information is completed and returned quickly, as it helps us ensure that appropriate clinic time, staff and resources are available for the child.
If the referral is accepted, the administration officer will contact the family to arrange an appointment. A formal letter will be sent to the family and the family will be contacted prior to the appointment as a reminder. If the referral is not accepted then alternative and suitable options will be provided to the referrer.
