Questions about referring a child
- Behavioural concerns
I鈥檓 referring a child with serious behaviour issues that affect their safety or ability to manage in the classroom. What鈥檚 the best approach?
Diagnoses can lead to more funding, but it's a complex issue that needs thorough clinical assessment and consideration of the best approach, tailored to each individual.
Where possible, it is recommended children to have their hearing and vision assessed, as well as assessment from their school counsellor prior to review.
- Mental health concerns
I鈥檓 referring a child with mental health issues such as anxiety or depression. What should I do?
For mental health concerns, refer the child to the Child and Family East (CAF脡) team if they are under 12 and in primary school.
For those over 12, refer them to the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) or Headspace.
We can work with these services if there are associated medical or neurodevelopmental concerns like ADHD or ASD.
- Learning and academic performance
I鈥檓 referring a child with learning and academic performance issues. How can you assist?
We can conduct a medical assessment and discuss the concerns with the family. We assess for conditions such as Intellectual Disability, ADHD, and Specific Learning Difficulties.
It鈥檚 helpful if the child is seen by the school psychologist before their appointment with us. We may also ask for additional information or assessments from the child, parents, and teacher, including questionnaires and school reports.
