About our service
Nuclear Medicine is a specialist children鈥檚 nuclear medicine service for inpatients and outpatients.
Our service is predominantly diagnostic, however, some therapeutic nuclear medicine is performed.
Our Positron Emission Tomography (PET) service performs the largest number of paediatric PET scans nationally. We also see a small number of patients from Sydney Children鈥檚 Hospital, Randwick.
We work closely with Medical Imaging and are co-located in the same building.
Nuclear Medicine service includes:
- using radiopharmaceuticals, both in-vivo and in-vitro, for diagnostic, therapeutic and investigative purposes
- the measurement and interpretation of bone mineral density
- consultative role in the diagnostic and therapeutic application of radiopharmaceuticals and radioisotopes
- research into the application of nuclear medicine in paediatrics at a clinical and basic research level
- incorporating nuclear medicine images with other modalities such as CT and MRI to improve diagnostic sensitivity.

Referral and appointment process for parents and carers
Request a referral
To make an appointment at our clinic, you will need a referral from your GP, paediatrician or specialist.
They will assess your child, discuss your concerns, and make a referral to the appropriate service.鈥�
In general, children must be 14 years or younger (Bone Density 20 years or younger) to be seen as a new referral.
Existing patients may be referred until 16 years of age. If you are unsure please contact the department directly.
Track your referral
Our department uses Consultmed to manage referrals. Your referring clinician sends the e-referral to us using the secure Consultmed platform.鈥�
Once we receive the referral, we will send you an email with your tracking information. We will update you as we process the referral and book your appointment.
To receive these updates, please ask your referring clinician to include your email on the referral.鈥�
