About our service
Respiratory Medicine looks after children with respiratory disorders through consultations and testing services.
The department incorporates the chest and asthma, Cystic Fibrosis and outreach clinics in Goulburn and Orange, as well as providing patient care and consultations.
Respiratory Medicine also works closely with Sleep Medicine.
Our services include:
- the Respiratory Function Unit performs a wide range of respiratory function tests
- the Complex Respiratory and Asthma Service provides asthma care within the hospital, Sydney West Area Health Service, and in the community
- the Cystic Fibrosis service provides care for children 0 - 18 years old
- allied health care from physiotherapists and dieticians.

Referral and appointment process for parents and carers
Request a referral
To make an appointment at our clinic, you will need a referral from your GP, paediatrician or specialist.
They will assess your child, discuss your concerns, and make a referral to the appropriate service.鈥�
Track your referral
Our department uses Consultmed to manage referrals. Your referring clinician sends the e-referral to us using the secure Consultmed platform.鈥�
Once we receive the referral, we will send you an email with your tracking information. We will update you as we process the referral and book your appointment.
To receive these updates, please ask your referring clinician to include your email on the referral.鈥�

Respiratory Function Unit
The Respiratory Function Unit provides testing to establish a diagnosis, provide ways of assessing the severity of disease and to monitor treatment progress. The laboratory tests patients with a broad range of respiratory disorders including Asthma, Cystic fibrosis, Suppurative Lung Disease, Neuromuscular disorders and congenital lung malformations.

Laboratory referrals
Please select the Respiratory Laboratory in Consultmed.
All Paediatricians can refer for the following tests:
- Spirometry
- Inhaled Allergen Skin tests (skin tests are only available for patients having spirometry)
- FeNO
Paediatric Respiratory Specialists can also refer for:
- Lung Volumes (Plethysmography)
- Diffusion studies (DLCO)
- Mannitol challenge
Internal referrals only are accepted for:
- Cardiopulmonary Exercise Tests (CPET)
- Eucapnic Voluntary Hyperpnoea
- Respiratory muscle strength testing: MIP (Maximal Inspiratory Pressures), MEP (Maximal Expiratory Pressures), & CPF (Cough peak flow)
- Oscilliometry
- Multiple Breath Nitrogen Washout
- Hypoxic Challenge testing: (simulated aircraft cabin testing at 15% oxygen)
- Double Diffusion studies (DLCO/DLNO)
- Hypertonic Saline Tolerance Tests

Billing and results
Your child has been referred to the Respiratory Function Unit at the children鈥檚 Hospital at Westmead for lung function testing.
If the referral for a test is from a physician within the Children鈥檚 Hospital at Westmead, a preliminary result will be available immediately upon completion of the test. A final copy of the test including a physician's report will be available within 5 business days.
If your referral is from a paediatrician outside of the Children鈥檚 Hospital at Westmead, a final copy of the test including a physician鈥檚 report will be sent to your doctor within 5 business days.
Patients that are eligible for Medicare are bulk billed. If your child is ineligible for Medicare, please contact the lab for further information.

Complex Respiratory and Asthma service
The service works with children and their families to provide asthma management and education at The Children's Hospital at Westmead for inpatients and outpatients.
The service also works in collaboration with other hospitals and community services in the surrounding local health districts. We also offer a range of educational programs for health professionals.
