We invite you to watch two videos that share the personal stories of three Australian families who have experienced selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) surgery for their child. 

These videos provide valuable insights into their experiences before and after the surgery. Each child’s journey and goals for SDR are unique. We hope these stories enhance your understanding of SDR and help you in making informed decisions.

In the videos you will meet:

• Bob who has bilateral spastic CP (GMFCS level III*). His goals were to improve transfers and walking with his mobility aids and reduce pain impacting on his sleep.
• Adriana who has bilateral spastic/dystonic CP (GMFCS level III*). Her goals were to reduce pain during daily activities.
• Orlando who has bilateral spastic CP (GMFCS level II**). His goals were to improve his walking so he could keep up with family and friends and reduce trips and falls.

Video 1: The journey before SDR surgery

This video discusses the medical and therapy interventions each child experienced prior to considering SDR, the assessment process, and each family’s personal experience in decision-making about SDR.

Video 2: The journey after SDR surgery

In this video, each family shares their experiences in the early days after surgery, the need for family support and commitment, and the benefits and importance of intensive rehabilitation after SDR.
