Paediatric Interventional Radiology Fellowship
The Paediatric Interventional Radiology (PIR) Fellowship offers advanced training in various techniques, clinical care, teaching, and research. Fellows will work with the medical imaging teams across our campuses, The Children's Hospital at Westmead and Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick.
This program is designed to enhance the delivery of high-quality image-guided and minimally invasive procedures for children.
Key responsibilities
As a PIR postgraduate fellow, you'll engage in clinical work, research, education, management, and leadership within clinical settings. You will follow procedure manuals, radiation safety protocols, and ethical guidelines while contributing to top-notch interventional radiology services for patients.
Career development
This fellowship is perfect for those aiming for a career in paediatric interventional radiology or those with adult IR experience looking to develop paediatric skills. The one-year program also offers chances to gain exposure to paediatric diagnostic radiology and elective rotations in adult IR/INR.
Duration and funding
The fellowship begins in early February and lasts 12 months.
The fellowship is supported by the training centre according to the standard compensation arrangement for Australian trainees/registrars.
The fellowship includes a salary of approximately AUD 180,000 per year, paid fortnightly. This salary covers your expenses, such as travel, accommodation, and health insurance. On-call work is paid separately with remuneration for time spent on call and for callbacks.

The Children鈥檚 Hospital at Westmead
The Children鈥檚 Hospital at Westmead is the largest paediatric hospital in New South Wales, with 350 beds. The Medical Imaging department provides a comprehensive Paediatric Interventional Radiology (IR) service, performing approximately 1,100 image-guided procedures each year.
Services include biopsies, fluid drainage, central venous access, angiography, and more. The department boasts advanced imaging technology, such as a biplane angiography unit, high-end ultrasound, a 64-slice CT scanner, and fluoroscopic equipment.
The team features experienced IR consultants, dedicated paediatric angiographers, and specialised nursing staff.
Sydney Children鈥檚 Hospital, Randwick
Sydney Children鈥檚 Hospital, Randwick delivers both paediatric and adult IR services, conducting around 300 paediatric procedures annually. It is a leading centre for interventional neuroradiology (INR) in NSW, offering a broad range of image-guided interventions.
The department operates a vascular malformation service with multidisciplinary clinics and a weekly sclerotherapy list. It is equipped with a biplane DSA suite and plans to install an additional single-plane suite, alongside an interventional ultrasound room, fluoroscopy room, and interventional CT sessions.
The team includes five adult IR specialists and one experienced paediatric IR consultant.
