Salary packaging
What is salary packaging?
Salary packaging is an employee benefit available to NSW Health staff. It uses pre-tax income to pay for everyday expenses, reducing income tax and increasing your take-home pay.
Whilst salary packaging benefits most staff, obtaining independent financial advice before starting is recommended.
All SCHN employees who are full-time, part-time or on a temporary contract may be eligible to salary package.
Casual employees need to contact to discuss their eligibility.
How salary packaging works
You nominate certain personal expenses for salary packaging, and your employer pays you an equivalent amount of your salary tax-free.
As a NSW Health employee, you can claim $9,009 of General Living expenses (like car, mortgage, rent and credit card payments) from your employer, plus $2,650 worth of Meal Entertainment (restaurant meals and home catering expenses).
This means up to $11,659 in salary can be paid to you tax-free every year.
You may also be eligible for additional tax-free payments if you live in a remote area, relocate for work purposes, or take out a novated lease on your family car.
Calculating tax savings
Packaged salary amounts are paid to you tax-free, so you save the tax you would otherwise have paid on the amount claimed.
For example, if you pay tax at the 34.5% marginal rate (meaning your taxable income is between $45,000 and $120,000 p.a.), salary packaging $1,000 reduces your tax bill by 34.5% x $1,000 = $345.
This saving is then shared 50/50 with NSW Health, so you save around $175.
Employees earning $60,000 who maximise their General Living and Meal Entertainment benefits could increase their take-home pay by $2,413 annually.
The more you claim, the more you save.
Note: Savings can be impacted if you have a student loan debt, and/or receive Centrelink benefits. Speak to SalaryPackagingPLUS to understand how your savings will be affected.
Meal entertainment benefit
The meal entertainment benefit allows you to pay for restaurant meals, functions and home catering costs with pre- tax income. This is additional to the $9,009 General Living expenses benefit.
An annual Meal Entertainment benefit limit of $2,650 applies.
Relocation expenses benefit
Relocation assistance may be available to staff required to permanently relocate their residence to work with NSW Health. Benefits may include removal and storage costs, fees related to the sale or purchase of property, utility connection costs, temporary accommodation, and transport costs.
Any items already paid for or reimbursed cannot be salary packaged.
If you think you may be eligible for the Relocation Expenses benefit, speak to SalaryPackagingPLUS.
Novated leasing and electric vehicles
Novated leasing allows you to salary package the cost of owning and operating your motor vehicle and has several benefits over traditional forms of vehicle financing, including:
- No GST payable on the purchase price or running costs
- You can receive fleet discounts on the purchase price and servicing costs
- One all-inclusive payment covers your finance, registration, insurance, fuel, servicing and tyre costs.
- Significant income tax savings
A novated lease can be taken in addition to your other salary packaging.
Electric vehicles
Thanks to the government鈥檚 new Electric Vehicle Discount Bill, additional savings will be enjoyed if you make your next car electric under a novated lease.
