Providing timely surgical care
Providing timely surgical care
Strategic priority: Safe care everywhere

We made significant progress in reducing the number of patients waiting longer than clinically recommended for their planned surgery following the reduction of surgery during the COVID pandemic. In the 12 months leading up to the end of March 2024, we reduced the number of children waiting by 92%, from 1,091 to 86, ensuring more children are receiving timely surgical care.
We also reduced the number of children waiting longer than clinically recommended for semi-urgent planned surgery by 98%, and reduced the number of children waiting longer than clinically recommended for non-urgent planned surgery by 89%.
鈥淚n recent months, we鈥檝e seen planned surgical activity go from strength to strength and there is no doubt this has made a significant difference for our patients and their families. This achievement is a testament to the commitment of our staff and their exceptional efforts to ensure the health system bounces back from the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.鈥
